Wetness has been a big talking point during the basic hardware development phase to believable replications of human bodies. It's relatively easy to heat up a humanoid robot or to make it breeze. But the moment it comes to moisture - like in mucous membranes of the mouth and genitals, or the liquids like sweat or, in this earliest case, tears, there are technical hurdles to be taken.
SONY, in the early years often called the "Apple" of robotics, introduced tears as the first of all its competitors.
