Lessing introduces us to a rather common moment at a first human with human meeting - one might call it a "date" even. A man might ask the woman "Are you a robot?" after some time?
Did he really believe she could be one?
"She grew up with two robot sisters." Which is a quite common family situation.
On the painting it reads: "She recently went to a course where humans learn how to be as perfect as robots." Most people, particularly beyond age 25, don't care. But some have, for some unknown reason, the urge to excel in being the perfect companion. Of course they have to learn how to overcome their own desires in a realtionship and how to just to almost everything for the other human, even against ones own interests.
Well, it usually isn't as extreme as it sounds. It's mainly how to follow etiquette, being super nice and close to servile, be pleasant if not pleasing and follow the rules of good manners.
A course like this can get one very close to the immaculate performance of a robot. Thus "are you a robot?" is conceived are flattering compliment. And therefor the answer:"No, but thanks for the sweet compliment."
The woman on the painting should be a bit careful, though, since among some men it has become a sport to seduce human women instead of cranking up the slider of the behavior app of one's robot to "hard to get". Does he have serious intentions? Might he be one of the few who is willing and able to stay in a relationship with a human woman although a robot is so much more fun and satisfaction?
