A woman is about to visit a man she has a crush on - trying his best to compete with other women and, more difficult, female robots. In front of his 15 room villa, an average size house in 250 years, she doubts whether all this is a good idea, including the seductive outfit that is going to help her, if one believes the advertisement.
In a number of versions Lessing varies the perpective and the focus. He also presents text free variants.
- - - Art historian explains painting: ...
"The optimistress", Bo Lessing, 2271
1 "The Optimistress"
2 "Human -- (in love with human man, despite ...)" --- one of Lessing's core subjects: male and female fall in love because of genetics, but the result of the love game is so negative that loving robots outperforms loving humans.
3 "The ad has promised:"
Thereis an industry selling cosmetics and cloths, even coaching, to enable humans to seduce humans and thus be more attractive than robots. Rarely it works, and if, than one might have just met another human being in the same phase of doubting the idea of emotional bond with robots.
4 "With our Slutware (R) you have a chance * to compete with his robots" --- This can be interpreted as a criticism against the beauty and apparel industry, reducing women to presenting themselves as sex dolls.
5 "*Disclaimer: if you don't succeed we don't take any responsibility nor will we compensate whichever loss or suffering you might experience. "
6 "Why -- Do you really need / always / frequently -- to repeat your / my stupidest mistakes?" --- She knows that she will fail, yet she's optimistic and realistic at the same time.
7 "His 15 room villa (less than 5 minutes from her 25 room mansion)" -- in a world with only 300 million people inhabiting earth, robots and machines working hyper productively, every human is wealthy enough for a standard of living like that.
8 "Posh entrance" -- very abstract, but visible with a little imagination ...
9 "The artist has limited the enigmatic elements to the level required by high art opinion leaders for a work to just still be considered acceptable despite the obvious - always IRONIC - use of banal iconography and - worst - even readable and understandtable text. The artist wishes to state: 'Sorry for emphasizing the teenage superficiality of the woman by using a more illustration oriented viaul language and not a painterly one.'" --- Lessing ridicules the quality criteria of the high art world which he considers elitist and obsolete.
Number missing (orange text top left of woman's head): "Would you have seen this without written hints - inconveniantly in a Lessing monography or minted in a too tiny info card attached to the wall next to the painting?" -- The artist defends his inserted texts since he wants them to help viewer getting access to the work.
